JPL and The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation were recently honored with two bronze Telly Awards for their work on the pedestrian safety video “Walk this Way.” The video is part of a series aimed to educate children, motorists and parents about pedestrian safety.
Each video in the series targets a different audience: parents of elementary school students, elementary school students, middle school students and young drivers. The award-winning video features Guy Walker, an animated character who springs to life from a pedestrian crossing sign. Guy shows children and their parents the safe way to walk, teaching them in an entertaining way.
“The ‘Walk this Way’ program aims to increase pedestrian safety for elementary school students,” said Chris Metka, the Safe Routes to School coordinator at PennDot. “We’ve had transportation departments and school districts from around the county contact us to let us know that they are using the video series to educate people about pedestrian safety,” he added.
One of many comments came from Dan Stewart of Maine’s Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Small Harbor Improvement Program who said “Nice safety videos! Best ever!”
The videos for elementary and middle school students explain walking signals and scenarios, and stress safe walking techniques. The video for parents emphasizes the importance of modeling safe behaviors for their children. The video aimed at young drivers teaches them that with driving freedom comes responsibility.
The videos can be viewed on PennDOT’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/PennsylvaniaDOT.
