Dr. Karl Kapp, a noted author and faculty member at Bloomsburg University’s Institute for Interactive Technologies (IIT) recently visited JPL to talk to our team about gamification. Gamification is using game-based approaches and elements in order to engage an audience. Before his session, he spoke to us about why the popularity of gamification is growing in the corporate world.
Dr. Kapp has written two books and been a featured speaker at the leading learning and development conferences on gamification. Based on his research and that of others, he spoke about why he thinks gamification can lead to better learning results.
While using gamification and technology to engage audiences online is proving to be successful, using gaming concepts with live audiences can be just as powerful. At JPL, we once had employees of an accounting firm engaged with a life-sized Monopoly-like game board. We’ve also had salespeople playing secret agents and taking on missions in order to learn more about their products and the marketplace. When designing these experiences, accomplishing the learning objectives needs to be the priority. I asked Dr. Kapp about this.
When executed well, creatively integrating Gamification into live and online learning experiences will engage learners and lead to better results. We certainly appreciated having Dr. Kapp share his knowledge with us as we use gamification as one way to help our clients accomplish their communications and learning goals.
